Students of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University are high-skilled sportsmen who make image for both the University and the whole country. Thus , during the last ÕÕ²Õ Olympic Games in Peking students of Institute of Physical Education and Sports won several medals. Lesya Kalitovska won a bronze medal in track cycling, Viktoria Tereshuk – bronze medal in modern pentathlon, Oleksand Vorob'yov – a bronze medal in sport gymnastics (still rings), Mykola Zhabnyak – a silver medal in the Õ²²² Paralympic Games.
Oleksandr Vorob'yov won a bronze medal in sport gymnastics at the Championship in London and added one more medal to his set.
At the beginning of November Oleksandr won a bronze medal at the seventh stage of the World Cup in Croatia.
It's necessary to mention that during the next to last XXVIII Olympic Games in Athens Viktoria Tereshuk took a honorary place in modern pentathlon, the second place at the World Championship in Guatemala (2006), won several times in Ukrainian Championships.
In 2004 Oleksandr Doroshenko became a champion in discus throwing and shot putting, and a bronze prize-winner in spear throwing in Paralympic Games in Athens.
Sergiy Kolos won a bronze medal in spear throwing. Dmytro Yatsenko and Eugen Gorshkovozov won golden medals in shooting and diving agreeably at the Ukrainian Championship in 2005.
The image of LNU named after Taras Shevchenko as the most sport higher educational establishment in Ukraine is supported by the students – masters of sports who study in speciality “Olympic and Professional Sport”, such as: Vitaliy Belashov (boxing), Larysa Bakulina, Andriy Isaev, Oleksandr Suprun, Oleksandr Vorob'yov, Maksim Kotenko, Sergiy Korotich (sport gymnastics), Olena Malyshenko (artistic gymnastics), Eugenia Zaitseva (artistic gymnastics), Oleksandra Bagata (swimming), Oleksandr Voronyuk, Pavel Pyshkov, Sergiy Eroshkin, Eugen Kozlyatin ( Greek and Roman fighting), Yulia Derkach and Illya Parhomchuk (heavy athletics), Oleg Lobanov, Lia Lobanova, Oleksandr Ryumin, Olga Shaklina, Eugen Kovalenko, Vasilisa Zelenska, Vitaliy Kharkivsky (track and field athletics), Andriy Gumenyuk, Sergiy Nesnimaishapka, Sophia Prishepa, Lia Rybalko (track cycling), Katheryna Lozhechka, Sergiy Rysenko (acrobatics). These students became winners in International and All-Ukrainian competitions several times.
The teacher of the Department of Olympic and Professional Sports, Candidate of physical education and sports sciences Sayenko Volodymyr Grygorovych has some sport achievements. He is a master of sport in kyokushin karate, bronze prize-winner of the World Cup in a heavy weight category (Sydney, Australia, 2006), participant of the Absolute Championship in an open weight category (Isesaki, Japan, 2008) in kyokushin karate, prize-winner and winner in Ukrainian Championships, twice owner of the Donbas Cup in a heavy weight category.
The members of the handball team “Burevisnyk” of Luhansk Taras Shevchenko National University became the world vice-champions among students. Thanking to it they were awarded with the sport rank “Master of Sports of Ukraine of International level” and their coach, teacher of IPES Gennadiy Maksymov was awarded with the rank “Honored Coach of Ukraine”.
Now three Honored Masters of Sports, 53 Masters of International level and Masters of Sports of Ukraine study in Institute of Physical Education and Sports.
Arthur Tyutyunik took the first place in heavy athletics at the regional championship, and he took the second place at the Ukrainian Championship.
Artem Pivovarov took the second place among the juniors in the match meeting in track cycling on the highway Ukraine-Russia in the group race (the city of Kamensk-Shahtinsky of Rostov region, Russian Federation ).
In February 2009 Lyubov Shulika took the first and the third places in the Track Cycling World Cup in Denmark.
On March 25-29, 2009 Lesya Kalitovska took the fifth place in the Track Cycling World Championship in Poland.
On July 12-19, 2009 Lyubov Shulika took the first place, Lesya Kalitovska – the first, the second and the third places and Svitlana Galyuk took the first place in the Track Cycling European Championship in Belarus.
